Was out of work for 10 days. New job is a contract job with no insurance. Been on contract for a year now. I make about 100K this year (120 last year). Take home is about 65,000 after all the taxes etc. But I do overpay a bit to avoid owing taxes. Trying to run a business on the side with the wife-its losing money so far. Plus mortgage, feeding kids, etc etc...I just couldn't afford the insurance. Keep in mind im in the top 20-30% of income earners..the other 70% are REALLY hosed.

Obamacare....presents me with some interesting choices. I am all for it, but feel it needs some tweeks, unfortunately the derpiness of our government means those probably wont happen. Specifically:
at 94K I think...I would get a decent subsidy on my insurance, anything over that and I wont. So...I might take two weeks off unpaid in December. Nice Christmas with the family. This is bad for our economy, but i am probably one of the few in this position.

Now the insurance....I paid $1,380 before....its 900 I think for the platinum plan. YES! Thank you Obama.

State is Oregon.

PLUS....I get to know all the other truly poor have medicare or affordable insurance. And....that could be me if something went horribly wrong. I really do like this.
I believe you might get $300 off by dropping your income to $93,000. So 3600. savings. Sounds costly though if you have to drop your income very much.

Based on what? Many insurers don't even have a department/division that administers prescription plans. That's contracted out to other service providers.

For example:

Yes, insurers are trying to comply with Obamacare requirements, but they're not quite there yet. That's why they requested a one year delay in the out-of-pocket cost caps, and the Obama Admin granted it.

Yep. The young and healthy are tapped even more to subsidize the older generation. Apparently subsidizing Medicare wasn't enough for them, they've now voted to also subsidize those a decade or more shy of Medicare eligibility.

3600 savings....or more then my take home for working those two weeks. Well worth it. Just not a good thing economically for the country in my opinion. Good choice for me though. My kids might get to remember what I look like!

But again, this is nit picking. And I think if we had a functional government things like this would be improved, maybe a finer drop off for example.

Depends.

If you are making a 120K you have to come down 26K or a couple of months off. Presuming you net 50% you loose around $9000.

If you are making 100K You need to come down 6K Then you take two weeks off and save $600 or so.

I can see why it makes sense one year and not another...but be very careful you have the numbers straight in the last quarter. And of course you turn down all yeqr end bonuses.

And I would agree that cliffs are simply bad practice. Should asymptote at the max income.

It's basic socialism, as this government (and this party) has been trying to put in place for generations.

Those who earn more, are forced to give to those who earn less. This is supposed to produce a better society somehow.
