One thing folks don't realize is that school holidays aren't about the students but teachers. One reason why Jewish holidays were incorporated into the calendar is that a significant number of teachers would take off that day. I suspect the number if NYC teachers that are Muslim, Hindi or even Chinese is pretty small.
These holidays were incorporated into school calendars because of both students and teachers period.
So what you are saying is that only those teachers in the majority should be considered, about 13%of students are muslim in NYC and they don't get a holiday.
The holidays were renamed to avoid controversy and give the perception that they are not religious holidays, change the so called winter and spring breaks to another week and see what happens. Funny how these are no longer religious weeks because they now have another name.

I thought your original post was a typo. It's mind boggling that you're concerned about the school calendar but don't even know an NYC teacher cannot be "hindi". Perhaps you should learn more about the topics you choose to discuss.
No but it's either all or none, personally I think they should be in school more not less.
I agree but there should be some freedom to allow teachers and/or students to take off personal days for religious and non-religious celebrations. The current system seems to exclude a lot of important holidays while including some... and for no good reason. It's not like any one religion is more important than another.

In the schools I attended in NY roughly 40% of the students would not have shown up on Jewish holidays. I'm not sure how you can claim its about the teachers and not the students.
What is the point and having a school day when a significant number of the students would not be present?

Christmas is more secular than religious so I can see the 2 weeks at Christmas.
Spring break does NOT always coincide with Easter which changes every year.
I've never seen spring break as religious since Easter is one day (Sunday) and Good Friday is not observed like it used to be.
