That's not the funny part though. After hearing the candidates promised to add Muslim holidays, the Chinese demanded the Chinese New Year become a public school holiday. Of course not to be outdone the Hindi are also demanding a public school holiday be added to the calendar. At this rate students of NYC will be attending school year round. A small price to pay to be enriched by glorious diversity.

After Bill de Blasio, Joe Lhota vow to add Muslim holidays to school calendar, other groups seek recognition - NY Daily News

Quote:
At this rate, city kids will be in school until the end of July.
Now that leading mayoral candidates Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota have both vowed to add two Muslim holidays to the public school calendar, advocates for other religious and ethnic groups are clamoring for their days to be recognized too.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver jumped into the brewing holy war Friday, saying the city should consider giving kids the day off for the Chinese New Year.

“I think the city has to recognize (Chinese New Year),” said Silver, a Democrat whose district includes Chinatown in lower Manhattan. “We don’t want to take away from the learning days, but we have to adjust the calendar appropriately to include all of the major populations that we have.”

Ramadan is becoming a very big celebration here, and the food after the fast is awesome.

So. If the people of NYC don't like it, they don't have to vote him in. Or they can recall him once he's in.

Otherwise, why should we care what they do in NYC?

How do you decide to include religious holidays for any faction, maybe we are better without any religious holidays for schools period.

IMO, year 'round school isn't a bad idea.

But to the point of the thread, if we're going to do it for Muslims in NYC, we should definitely do it for Jews, too. And so it goes. Not workable, I don't think. People who want this should send their kids to private school. That's what Catholics have done forever.

No need for any more religious holidays in public schools. We've already changed the name of Easter and Christmas breaks to "spring" and "winter" to be more neutral, so let's not go there. Quick cultural lessons or activities to mark holidays? Sure. If led by students. I've seen this done, and it works.

It doesn't matter, NYC is about to go to hell. The GOP candidate is a non-entity and the Democrat is running on the fact he is married to a black woman and has bi-racial children. He is going to straight-jacket the world's best police force by firing Ray Kelly, halt stop and frisk, end charter schools in NYC and raise taxes. A perfect liberal. And he's way ahead in the polls. NYC is about to jump off the GW bridge, so muslim holidays are the least of it.

It's a City State. Not really part of America any longer.

Pass the big gulp.

Last I checked NYC hasn't seceded from the US and their GDP is still counted in the US GDP.
