What should they have done?
How much time did they give the kid? How close were they? Why was LE there at all? Could they have stayed back 100 yards and watched for a little while?

Too little info to answer your question.

BTW, not too many mass murderers carry a gun around in the middle of the street during the day. In fact, probably none at all.

If we are going to outlaw any guns it should be these toys guns at least from public streets, they are far too realistic and without having been there you can't blame the officers for what transpired. If I were to guess the kid probabaly thought it was some kind of joke and didn't realize how serious a sitution like that can be. Probably picked the thing up to show them it was fake.

.
You don't want to be on the other end of a AK-47 even at one hundred yards.

We've had realistic toy guns for at least 60 years. I don't recall any problems until recently when the entire nation got onto this anti gun phobia.

Maybe the kid didn't think it was a joke. Maybe he was just playing...being a kid.

Other than BB guns I don't recall anything that looked as real as these do. Side by side a few feet away you can't tell the difference except that small orange cap on the muzzle and that's easily painted black....

What technological control devices stop a 5.56 round from killing a cop?

You can't jump to conclusions here, if you're walking down the street and someone points this at you are going to return fire? I know I am, orange muzzle or not because the next thing is the real criminals will be painting orange caps on the ends of the real thing.

rubbish, that is EXACTLY the point. if you dont know that a weapon being pointed at you is real or not, then you best treat it as real until you find out otherwise. if you dont you could end up dead.

Did the web site say the kid pointed his toy gun at the officers?
