I'm a big fan of the new Pope as well. I've often criticized the position in the past. This Pope seems to be more of a humanitarian than one of condemnation.

I agree, he seems like a stand up guy. The church made a good pick this time around.

That is similar to saying you like the new Godfather.

When are we going to see an end to the cover up over child abuse? When are the perpetrators going to be handed over to justice rather than shuffled from one diocese to another? When will the Roman Catholic church make full reparations to those abused rather than using bankruptcy and other financial dodges to avoid their responsibility?

When is the Vatican Bank going to get cleaned up? Will the new pope come clean on the money laundering and other scams?

The Roman Catholic church remains a criminal enterprise. It will take more than a few PR gimmicks to change that reality.

I'm somewhat of a recovering Catholic. It's complicated, but while I don't fully agree with the fundamentals of the Church, the cover ups aren't indicitive nor do they represent every Catholic that belongs to the Church.

I draw a distinction between Catholics and the organization that is the Roman Catholic Church.

I'm an atheist, but the shakedown of the Church over the "abuse scandals" is as repellent as any fleecing of the public by televangelists, or any other legal extortion mechanism.

I've been very impressed by the current pope. he seems to realize that a church based on money doesn't line up with its stated beliefs. He does believe in getting money in, but he also seems to believe the best place to spend it is on helping people, not buying a bigger mansion for the church leaders.

He's also been working on cleaning up the vatican banking system. Apparently he doesnt like it being used to launder money for criminals. Weird huh?

He's been saying that the narrow focus on abortion and homosexuality shouldn't define the church. Don't get me wrong-he still views them as wrong, but they're only a small part of what should define the church.

He seems concerned by the rising inequality issues.

In other words, he seems to act like the business of the church is to follow the bible. Something that is very very impressive and heartening to see.
