Or are right left politics in this country so at odds that you can't even have friends that are from the opposite end of the spectrum? Would you break up a friendship if yyour friend supported higher taxes on the rich, gay marriage, abortion rights, and iimmigration reform?
No, but liberals do all the time.
They're all nice folks, till they discover you're one of those "evil conservatives" and then they're hostile.

I have conservative friends, but none that are terribly close.
I think the real problem is that our culture is so anti-political, many people think it is absurd that political disagreements should separate people. But they shouldn't find that absurd. People with sharply divergent political view tend to have sharply divergent values and completely different views of what reality is. It is not surprising that under those circumstances, people have a hard time getting close.
My tolerance and respect for my liberal friends views vastly outweighs their tolerance and respect for mine. You should read Portland's craigslist in the roommate section: tons of liberals saying they can't live with conservative. It's really disgusting.
As the saying goes..."Just cuz someone's sh*t smells like yours, it doesn't mean it's still not sh*t."
I personally think our two party system is a giant joke. I take pride in not voting, as national politics are a huge waste of time.
My face book friends are about 50/50; however, one would think that my friends consist of almost all hard core conservatives, as they seem to be the only ones that post political stuff on FB. I just block all that propaganda now, as it gets old seeing chain messages about how are presidents the next Hitler, or how planed parenthood evil LOL. The people that post this nonsense are mostly the uneducated bible thumpers that never left the small town I grew up in. I remain friends with these people on FB, but I would never hang out with any of them outside of a group activity. This is mainly because we just don't have anything in common anymore and not so much because of politics.
Of course. I even have quite a few liberal family members. Most of us just agree to disagree on certain subjects. However, there is one in my family that is far, far left and she literally stopped talking to several of my family members simply because we didn't like Obama.
Some of my closest friends are conservatives. That said, I don't have time, patience, or any interest in befriending people who do not support gay rights, do not admit that the healthcare system needs an overhaul (lost many friends during my fight with cancer because my mere existance and daily struggles went against their preconceptions), or subscribers to the religious right or Tea Party lines.
I have to laugh at this whole Conservative versus Liberal thing when most people pretty much fall into the center. Personally I have friends that are center, far left and far right. I would never base friendships on ideology. That would be really foolish.
