Would your health insurance cost more or less if you each had a single person Obmamcare exchange policy vs your Obamacare health insurance cost if you were married? This is not a gay marriage question. It's for anyone who plans to get married. It's simply whether it's cheaper health insurance-wise for two people to stay single and live together or cheaper for two people to get married and have a single policy that covers both of them under Obamacare. Factor in the deductible, too, please. I'm just curious if Obamacare will impact marriage.

I don't want anyone to do any special work. I just figure if you are planning to get married you have probably already checked.

I believe the answer depends on how much money is being made by both individuals, and if that income qualifies for subsidies based on ACA guidelines.

If you aren't married, but are living with your significant other, then both of your incomes are still legally separate. Therefore, depending on how much each of you make, both of you could qualify for subsidies. For example, let's say the limit for subsidies is $50,000. You each make $45,000 yearly. Therefore, as single individuals, you would both qualify for ACA subsidies.

But, if you get married, then you're income is no longer considered separate under the ACA guidelines. You're income is now household income. At that point the household income rises to $90,000 a year, and surpasses the limit to qualify for subsidies. Therefore, the premiums, for your health insurance, would be much higher than it would be if you had remained single.

This has been called a "marriage penalty" although it's not labeled as such in the ACA. This is presuming, of course, that neither party is covered for health insurance from their employer.

This is a brief answer to your question because I'm pressed for time. But, you do ask a valid question and it is one that many currently married, or engaged, couples will be considering.

In my household it would be cheaper to get insurance together. I'm a stay at home, so only one income in the household. My fiancees income would be too high for any subsidies for her alone, but well under the family total for income.

It would depend on the household income for each couple.

Well, that's interesting. Thanks for the links. When I was married my then-husband was on my health insurance and as a couple we paid the same as a family with kids. I thought that was unfair.

DH and I have seriously considered a strategic divorce. At this point my premiums are still subsidized to the point insurance is affordable, but should that situation change we won't hesitate to get a divorce. It's just a piece of paper. Florida is no-fault and a divorce takes only a few weeks.
