Virginia is a purple state.

In 2008, Senator Obama defeated Senator McCain by 7.2% nationally and 6.3% in Virginia. In 2012, President Obama defeated Governor Romney by 3.9% both nationally and in Virginia. Thus, Virginia is currently mirroring the national Presidential vote, and is a state that has been gradually shifting from red towards blue; a year ago was just passing the tipping point.

While its house is still heavily red (it will be less so after tonight), its senate is split evenly.

While 8 of 11 members of the House are Republicans, both Senators are Democrats.

McAuliffe will be the third of four Governors to be a Democrat.

It's a purple state.

Virginia has had 6 Republican governors since the late 1800s. A Democrat being governor is nothing new.

Like every "blue state", very, very few counties have the population to garner enough votes to pull a state into the democrat column.

Look at the election map.....very, very little blue.

It's easily one of the nation's most beautiful states.

Now Brooklyn and Bayonne? Those are crapholes!
For about 17 years of my life and I still think the best thing I ever did was move away from that craphole called Virginia. And yes Bayonne, NJ is pretty much a craphole. Brooklyn isn't bad, but has reached a point of being too expensive to live in. Personally I can't wait to move back to Oregon. The Northwest is the most beautiful part of this country.

Though I do find it interesting the amount of districts that went blue in this election, even into the foothills of Virginia. Very surprising.

Didn't the majority of the vote go against mcauliff? Typical dem dirty tricks had an obama bundler bankroll the third party candidate to split the vote. Add those votes together and mcauliff got fewer votes. Not a blue state, just a dirty one thanks to dems and obama.

It's because you're clueless about the state of Virginia and its history.

Most governors of Virginia have been moderate leaning (slightly left or right).
