But, but, isn't that the salient point of owning a weapon in an urban environment, to protect oneself? A fear based reason?
You cannot expect someone who feels the need to possess a firearm for self protection to NOT have some paranoia. It's an oxymoron.
Choosing to live in such an environment is the mystery for many of us.
There is some truth to what you said....but remember I said OVERLY paranoid. One should have a HEALTHY fear of crime, which comes from knowledge and understanding of crime. That is not the same as paranoia.

You say this, without knowing the full story....
Do you know the nature of the person who pulled the trigger? What about how many times they have been robbed before, how mnay times has the place been broken into.....
Sounds like a horrible situation. Feel bad for that woman and her family. There needs to be an investigation into what happend and if that guy truely shot her for no reason, he needs to go to jail for a long long time.

Unless there is other evidence, that probably won't happen. Being the sole witness and having the right lawyer is turning out to be a get-out-of-jail card if there ever was one. At least the Michigan stand-your-ground law calls for "reasonable belief" that you're in danger. (As opposed to the really, really backwards states where it's just a matter of sincere belief. Awesome work, that.)
On the other side of the spectrum, here's a local case that just happened.
Two young men, ages 24( with a criminal history) and 18( criminal history unknown) enter a corner convenience store and commit armed robbery. A neighbor witnesses the robbery and as the two are exiting the business orders them to stop and wait for police as he's calling the police. The two take out their handguns and the neighbor shoots them both killing them. He has a license to carry.
The unidentified neighbor who was hailed as a hero and won't be charged by police, now has the relatives of the two robbers demanding he be charged. A third accomplice, age 21 who was the driver, is being charged with murder. The dead mens relatives said they were not bad and deserve justice. I say they got it.
