For the first time in 30 years, officials in the country’s economic capital have urged eligible parents to plan for a second child.

During the one child policy most wanted a male. I wondered who all these boys were going to marry when they grew up? Aborting females was very widespread.

This is really not news. When we were in China we found that there were a variety of policies depending on where you lived. Farmers had more than one. City dwellers were more likely to only be allowed one.

It has changed dramatically in the last decade along with the fact there is no longer socialized medicine, no longer paid education, no longer free housing, etc. Along with the capital market changes, the social/monetary structure for families is very different.

They have also found that having one child means that a young couple may become responsible for four older adults as well as their children. Talk about the "sandwich" generation.

Infact, most Chinese only want one Child. Expecialy those citizen of Shanghai/Beijin,this kind big city.Parents could hardly offer 2 Childern's eduction fee. And I think it is necessery for Chinese to have one-Child policy. It is surely good to both Chinese people and world wide.

China is undergoing a massive demographic shift like none ever seen before, with a tremendous ageing population which is going to eclipse the ageing population issues of Western countries. There is going to be a huge number of elderly people with few young people to support them in the years to come. If they wanted to correct this imbalance they would have to try to convince people to have 8 kids each!

Thats a real kick in the face to all these women they made abort at 8 months pregnant. Or who's kids they just put in a dumpster . Maybe the gov't should be paying them for their loss. Not that it will bring the kids back but you know its something.

The United States should have a One Child only policy. I am increasingly disturbed by promotion of people who have many children, and no real plan of how to support them, aside from reality tv shows.
