Well the problem with that is, the U.S. is going bi-lingual at a greater rate than Canada has to date with "official" bilingualism being on the books. One cannot move within your southern climes without being faced with Spanish in any sector of the economy or officialdom. Give it another five years or so and you might just have to provide legislation to "protect" English.
people make a big deal about knowing at least 1 other language a little bit... like Universities have made 2 years of foreign language a requirement since years ago, and high schools have required to take 2 semesters of classes or more of foreign language.
I knew it was a waste of time for me, since I had no desire to learn another language, nor did I have the special brain ability for that.
So I wasted time being in those classes, it was dumb. Had to cheat to just pass.
There is already google translate which if you really need to communicate with someone else, you can already. And the technology is only going to get better. There is no need for people that don't want to learn a foreign language to be forced to take the pointless classes to graduate.
That won't happen since we'd "school" Mexico real fast and Mexico would cry if they were forced to dump Spanish for English. Tho the US might get maybe Baja, I don't know, just guessing here.
Merging with Mexico then forcing them to drop their language in favor of English sounds more like a hostile take over rather than an amicable merger.
Lets hope in the Canada part of the big merger America has the good sense to adopt the Canadian healthcare system. And good luck schooling the French in Quebec into dropping their language in favor of English..

Seriously; like I said earlier, IF Quebec tried to leave Canada, then the rest of your country will probably want to join the US, at least those provinces north of our New England. Tho word is that Quebec's "French" based way of life may die out since they don't make enough babies in 2013 to replace the people dying.

Using the same logic, why learn math? History? Geography? Science? Literature?
You can just look it up on the Google.

I cant get too serious in a hypothetical scenario.
Quebec has already tried through referendums to leave Canada twice in the past 30 years and i dont see any indication of the rest of the country wanting to join the USA.In fact the current ruling government in Quebec is the separatist PQ party.
Just heard the author of the book being interviewed and she comes from the economic standpoint and introduces an interesting premise. Article worth the read.
Some are bored, others are high on drugs. Not much is happening. Why not make a few bucks from imaginary tales?
Let me offer a few alternatives:
China to occupy Iran (to help them build a better nuclear weapon)
Russia will invade Japan. Putin will confront best Japanese Judo masters.
A new plot for JFK assassination (actually, quite a saturated topic).
A new UFO revelation involving the government (so so)
Jimmy Hoffa (still popular)
Princess Diana (new cover-up theory involving the royals)

Because you use math in every day life when your out shopping, buying food, paying rent, etc...
I don't care if Foreign language is provided by schools for students to take. But they should not force people to take foreign language in order to graduate. Learning a foreign language takes a tremendous amount of passion, determination, brains, and time. High Schoolers can tell already for themselves if they want to learn one or not.
We waste so much money just to support teachers/professors by forcing kids to take classes they other wise wouldn't need or want to take.
They say that the reason students need to take calculus is because it 'opens their mind', its teaching them 'creativity'....
When that couldn't be further from the truth.
Schools are where parents send children to lose their creativity and become soulless rats to the system.

Not a problem. Your cellphone has a built-in calculator.
Now you don't want schools teaching foreign languages or calculus? What do you want them to teach?
