Honestly, grade school and college athletics are seriously overhyped. They can be entertaining to watch and keep you in good shape, but when a high school that can't afford computers still shells out the money on its football team, you know something's up with our priorities.
It's ridiculous that we worship athletes on the basis of an arbitrary set of physical abilities that makes them good at a contrived sport. Naturally, we give such athletes slack when it comes to academic ability. For some reason, the nerd who can't throw a ball (like me until high school) is mocked and humiliated (even when such a skill is utterly worthless to society), but everybody leaves the athlete who can't do math alone. I'm not saying that athletes are bad people, but they certainly should not be praised more than people who have actual intellectual abilities.
Where are the internet tough guys? You have a wonderful stereotype for athletes. Not surprising in the least.

You make a wonderful stereotype for a conservative, since you didn't bother to actually read my post before you responded to it - I pointed out that not all athletes are like this, but those that have no skills outside of sports are elevated far beyond their actual worth to society.
What is their "worth" to society. A clown making ten million a year is going to generate a lot more economic activity than your burger flipping calculus hero. Hint for you.........calculus is not a sign of intelligence. It is pretty common class in high school nowdays. Even for the football team at least at my local school.
