The actions of the different officers and the fact that the routine traffic stop ended with an officer shooting at a car and a high speed chase has led to an internal investigation, the New Mexico State Police told ABCNews.com.

Ferrell was charged with five counts of abuse of a child, aggravated fleeing an officer, resisting an officer, reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to The Taos News. Her teenage son was charged with battery of an officer.

The Taos News reported that New Mexico State Police said they allegedly found two marijuana pipes in the minivan.

Hmm I don't see where the cops were charged with attempted murder, but the woman was charged right away and her kids stolen from her.

While I hold the mom responsible for doing what she did, the cop NEVER should have fired upon the minivan.

I saw a recap of this on the news this morning, and it was nuts. One officer shattered a window with his nightstick, and then the other one shot at a minivan. It's not like they were fleeing in a LearJet. I think cops should likely be able to track down a minivan.

And like most police "internal investigations", this one likely will not result in any sanctions against the officers. Cops have a difficult job, admittedly. But some of them are not equipped mentally to be carrying a gun.

If only the mom had cooperated and avoided traumatizing her kids.

Police are obviously NOT trained to deal with people who have mental issues or who are under the influence of mary jane or other drugs.

The woman clearly should have never drove off when the officer was going back to his car, likely to just write her a ticket, and then send her on her way. However, I think the mom was possibly HIGH on mary jane or she has mental issues, and drove off because she was paranoid about something that wasn't real.

Sometimes, you are just left wondering what goes through a person's head. This could have been so easy - like thousands of other traffic stops every day. Instead, the woman managed to create a big old mess that could have resulted in the death of one or more of her children. For what? A $71 ticket?

That said, there is no justification for shooting at a car full of kids. This moronic cop should not be wearing a uniform and he should not be allowed to have a gun. Owning a gun comes with great responsibility, especially when you are a cop and have been entrusted with this responsibility by the public. He has clearly shown that he cannot properly weigh all the factors when under pressure.
