I have a strong dislike for cities and when I'm in them I keep my wits about me and am acutely aware of my surroundings and the people in them. I also look approaching people in the eye; not in a challenging way but enough to let them know that I see them.

That's what I do. I make eye contact with every single person I come across. I look at them long enough to let them know I'm aware of their presence so don't try anything funny, but not short enough that it tells the other person that I'm defenseless. These thugs are like dogs, if you run away from a dog or you break off eye contact with it first, it'll chase after you because it senses the fear in you
