Oh the irony...

Quote:
Tempo Interaktif reports that Angkasa Pura - the management of Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport are concerned that the large number of additional private charter flights expected in Bali during the UN Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC) December 3-15, 2007, will exceed the carrying capacity of apron areas. To meet the added demand for aircraft storage officials are allocating "parking space" at other airports in Indonesia.

The operational manager for Bali's Airport, Azjar Effendi, says his 3 parking areas can only accommodate 15 planes, which means that some of the jets used by VIP delegations will only be allowed to disembark and embark their planes in Bali with parking provided at airports in Surabaya, Lombok, Jakarta and Makassar.

What a travesty!!! Like me you're probably asking "what can we do to help those who are doing so much to help us?"

I come to expect this type of behavior from UN officials. Does anyone here believe that they are personally concerned with global warming? But they sure want you and I to be concerned and would love to tax the **it out of us with a carbon tax if we allow them to.

While global warming is a real issue that needs realistic solutions there are also things we must keep in mind.

In our modern industrialized society some pollutants are going to be emitted into the air until we find a way to replace our current energy usage with a cleaner one.

I don't think supporters of clean air and climate control really want the entire world to stop driving cars or flying planes. The solution is going to come in the form of cleaner energy and the removal of toxic gases and the factories that produce them.

If anybody suggests that we need to put away our vehicles and ride bikes then they have a couple of loose screws. Remember that there are cleaner alternatives to our current fuel supply...Ethanol,anyone? Keep an eye on Brazil in the next few years.

So in that regard, no there is no irony to the Bali situation. Also keep in mind that Bali's international airport is a single runway field only capable of supporting a few flights at any one time. In other words, it doesn't take much for the airport to become overcrowded. Plus if one were to want to really argue about it, we could debate how there is really no other way short of by boat to reach the island of Bali. Never the less, what aircraft engines emit into the air is a fraction compared to the damage the big pollutants out there do. In fact, aircraft contribute only 1% to the total NOx emissions in the air. So to call the UN delgates out for riding their planes to a conference is a bit of a stretch.

Private jets are small by nature.

I doubt it would have been that hard to coordinate schedules so as to have people meet and 'air-pool'.

It is simple hypocrisy in my opinion.

All animals are created equal, some are more equal than others.

I see this as them sending the wrong message to everyone. Why should an average guy feel guilty about driving a Hummer? The answer is, he shouldn't. If sacrifices have to be made, let the ones advocating sacrifice lead by example.

Is there any reason why these UN delegates couldn't take a commercial flight? Maybe they feel they're too good for that.

Typically silly. In seeking to assess current technologies and the damage they have done, and while encouraging both new technologies that will do less damage and programs to reverse such damage as can be undone, the people involved are still constrained by current technologies. It isn't so much the irony of the actors, but rather the insincerity of the crtitics, that is impressive here...

Or they could have all met in one place "over there" and taken the slow boat to their destination. That way a chance they could get caught in a tsunami, and never to be heard from again.

Or gee, how about a tele-conference or even an open discussion forum?

Oh, no travel parties and budgets to spend on that, nevermind.

Please never mention the obvious hypocrisy of it all.

The apologists(or perhaps they are the faithful) of the global warming cult are funny.
