The economics may be there for more expense items but maybe not for pizza. Instead of Amazon charging $10 for delivery & passing it on to UPS they get to bypass UPS and keep the $10 themselves. $5-$10 may be too high a cost for pizza delivery.

There are all sorts of things to overcome but it should cost pennies to deliver a pizza across town if they get the rest down.

DATA is very valuable on both corporate ends of the system. Very simple.

There are several whistle blowers that might enlighten you on this, in case you have failed to see all the multitude of articles on how much money is being made with all this DATA by various municipal and transnational entities.

Whistleblower? What is there to blow the whistle over?

What a mind numbingly ridiculous topic here. I mean, wow. The OP encounters an interesting story about a private company exploring automated air delivery of commercial product orders, and immediately wenT to "ZOMG! Tea Party poster mode ENGAGE!"

I did not claim a whistle blower was required here. Hardly.

My mention of whistle blower here relates to detail usage of data on both the municipal and transnational side.
How it is gained and who benefits. Data is highly profitable.

There is much information about this becoming more transparent all the time.
ATT, Verizon, Sprint Are Paid Cash By NSA For Your Private Communications
Wire tapping is very profitable for Telcoms and ISPs.

4th amendment aside.

Amazon is not a private business. They are a publicly traded corp, that is approximately 70% institutionally owned.

I can see it now -- a young jihadist orders up some poisonous gas from Amazon and is excited that he's going to get same day delivery... Allah be praised! But wait, when the package comes to the door it's being delivered by a drone?!?! The drone blows him up, and he dies cursing the confounded infidel. It's better than a Road Runner cartoon.

A business that is traded on a public exchange is still a private business.
