I remember the cash for clunkers program. You would think that people were getting a free car. I remember asking my brother if he was going to trade his car in and he said no he couldn't because if he couldn't afford to save for a downpayment how was he going to afford a car payment. Yet so many that couldn't afford a car ran to the car lots.
Were a TINY fraction of the mortgage boom that fueled our housing prices and distorted our economy, resulting in the crash that occurred.
They are not and never were the problem. The problem was a mass of "mainstream" lending that had insufficient equity, credit, and income stability that was buying homes that were overpriced from 10 to 200% - CAUSED directly by the excessive lending.
40% of loans in 2006 were stated loans, the growth in those type of loans from 03 to 06 were 500%.
