Is it true that South Africa started to decline, in terms of its economy, order, safety, etc., after the end of apartheid when blacks took over?

Whatever happened in SA and whatever could possibly be attributed to a switch from a white to a non-white government is nothing compared to the downfall of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe.

Alas, is it a race issue or is it simply a corruption issue?

What happened to Rhodesia and Zimbabwe? Were they ruled by whites and prosperous?

Why was corruption a non issue pre-1994?

No. When anti-apartheid sanctions ended, an economic boom resulted. It's true that its economy started to sputter in the late 2000s, but then so did almost every other major and not-so-major world economy.

Crime -- although still high by world standards, is dropping steadily too. It's true that there was a spike in crime after 1994, but that's about what you'd expect to happen when a police state disappears.

Question: Was South Africa a better place to live twenty years ago or today?

For whites: about the same.

For most non-whites: better.

For a lucky few of all races: much better.

For an unlucky few others of all races: much worse.

I'm sure that's not the answer you were fishing for, though.

Yes and no. It did go into decline, but it has nothing to do with the end of apartheid or blacks being power. It has to do with them adopting socialist policies. The whites who ran the apartheid government could have adopted the same policies with the same results.

And here's yet more evidence that your implied premise (that the end of apartheid unleashed a tsunami of crime upon South Africa) is simply not true.

Crime Trends in South Africa 1985-1998

The increase in violent crime started in the mid-1980s -- long before apartheid ended.
