This is not something that is to be solved by war because it isn't an act of war. Foreign nations invest in other nations all the time for various reasons. Many times such investments end up helping both nations. We have no one to blame for China owning so much of our national debt except for ourselves and our Congress. The best way to solve the problem with our debt owned by China is good budget and budget cuts so our nation's government will live within it's means while paying down the debt it owes to foreign nations. Not by going to war.
I've yet to meet a liberal who is concerned with our debts and deficits. Therefore, it is impossible to reduce our dependency on foreign debt purchases when an entire faction of our citizenry is completely disengaged from the very source of influence that our debt practically gives to China.
Mark my words. The national debt will not be reigned in, or otherwise resolved, by our own government. The end game will not be eliminating debs/deficits through our own actions, it will be a conflict with our debtors whom are steadily building the infrastructure needed to directly challenge the United States. Wait and see.
How about the part of starting world war 3 with a large nuclear power? This does not warrant it.
This particular incident, no, does not warrant a war. But that's not the point. The point is that China apparently feels that it has enough resolve and capability to directly challenge the United States without any sort of retribution. Are we now a paper tiger because of our national debt?
This isn't a wise decision. We've already been stuck in 2 wars for more than 10 years now, our federal deficit is in the tank with much of our nation's debt owned by the Chinese government, and you propose committing an act of war against the nation that holds our country's government in financial hostage? Until the Chinese military fires upon our Navy ships, avoid war at all possible cost. US needs to bring all our nation's troops home from the middle east, set a real cost cutting budget to reduce our nation's debt, take care of our wounded veterans. We, the people, need to vote out of office every member of Congress and elect a US President who will stand by his oath of office and adhere to the US Constitution instead of ignoring or overriding it with Presidential Executive Orders or through Government agency regulations. We need a president that doesn't bow down to foreign leaders, insult our nation's allies, and buddy up with nations that hate us.
China holds around $1.3T of our debt. Hardly holding us hostage.
Unless China is a direct threat to the US mainland, and I don't believe that they are (this country could never be successfully invaded and occupied by another nation), I say let's not get involved. Another option is, we can stop doing business with them. Our outsourcing is boosting their economy, and human rights aren't exactly a priority over there. We love to preach freedom and democracy, yet we do business with scumbag governments like China, and Saudi Arabia who treat their people like s***!
It is interesting that the very people who support the business model that leans on cheap foreign labor to increase the company coffers at American expense, want to destroy the country that supplies the cheap foreign labor. Can't have it both ways.
Horsecrap! You think everything devolves to the guy sitting in your Whitehouse?
He's out there droning weddings fer cry'n out loud, now you want him to do what; start a nuke war over Islands off China's coast? Are you completely insane?
Look how your Government reacted to Cuba's follies and you expect the Chinese to be any the less bellicose over islands right off their coast?
How would your navy be expected to react if you launched a new fighting ship and the Chinese sent a missile destroyer to shadow it off the coast of Washington. C'mon get real here and try looking at these things using your "but we're not used to being treated this way" glasses.
You had better get used to it and FAST because it's only going to get more dramatic in the future as other major players either build new or regain old strengths militarily or economically.
The real fear the rest of the planet has is that while others are gaining and you are waning in stature; a genuine war will be started over an "they insulted me" arrogance moment taken too far.
Empires come and empires go; it's your turn in the barrel.
But if they stopped buying our debt, what would we do? That's the bigger, more pressing question. We need China....and China knows that. That's why they are acting out against us and our interests.

Yes, as history has shown empires can and do fall. We are spreading ourselves dangerously thin. Personally I think our falling will be on our own doing, and from within. But having said that, if we do not learn from history, we will continue to repeat it.
Now how many of your corporations have major holdings in China? You ain't printing their shareholders dividends in a half hour.
Agreed. Our countries are definitely dependent on each other. I just wanted to dispel the myth that China is an extremely large holder of government debt. If they held more than half of our debt, then I'd be concerned.
