The federal government worked just fine before income tax, and before withholding: all it should be doing is defending the borders, and regulating trade. How ironic that it has grown so large and corrupt that those are the only things it DOESN'T bother to do.

How large government is has NOTHING to do with its duties or functions. Government size is only limited by its power to confiscate income--and when we allowed Big Government to overthrow the Constitutional prohibition on income tax, and then institute withholding, we effectively threw out all limits. Now we all just suffer until the whole house of cards falls.

I keep hearing our federal government claim it cannot find anything to cut, so they come up with stupid deals like the president's sequestration cuts. I've posted the GAO reports many times, they list hundreds of billions in cuts to wasteful, useless and inefficient programs and spending, and most come from bloated agencies like the Department of Defense, SO WHY NOT START CUTTING???

This president, like so many others, claim they will go thru the federal budget line by line and cut wasteful spending, then they get into office, and not only ignore cuts, they sign into law new wasteful spending.

When the sequester cuts slashed $85 billion from the federal budget, crippling federal programs like Head Start and halting crucial research at the National Institutes of Health, the government continued spending tax dollars on things like 3-D pizza printers for NASA, a beachfront property loan program for millionaires, and a $300 million Army surveillance blimp that doesn’t work. Those are just three of the 100 examples of egregious government waste that cost taxpayers $30 billion this year--all detailed in Sen. Tom Coburn’s (R-OK) annual “Wastebook,” released Tuesday.
You forgot the $24Bil the Repub shutdown blatantly wasted.

So let's see...

Shutting down the government for a few days added $25 billion but we can't figure out how to save more than $30 billion in a year.

Republicans in the House did not have the power to shut down the government, that would be the result of failed leadership and failed negotiation skills from the Senate leader and the president.

Clearly the useful liberal idiots have their talking points.

And it was only what, 17% of the government that was actually 'shutdown?'

BTW libs, all the furloughed employees received back pay for their vacation time.

That is nothing compared to the wasteful spend going on with the $700billion defense budget I bet 30% to %50 of that amount is wasteful spending. Republicans are always trying to add to more even though the branches of military keep saying they have to much stuff as it is

This is what pisses me off about this board and right wing "thinkers". They spend much of their time whining about how to pinch pennies from the poorest people in this country while their Republican elected officials think absolutely nothing about spending $100 million on new toys, just so we can "get tough".

The other main money sink in our government is medicine, an instance where their beloved privatization is actually giving us mediocre care at ripoff prices.

Some of the worse politically is grants gotten thru attachment of pork to bills to essentially bribe local officals to senators and congressman. Bring home the pork and get reelected. One reason Simpson/Bowles was not supporedt by president who appointed them or either house. In time we will probably see much worse cuts as Greece did because of kicking the can.The more dependent your the worse it will be.

Doesn't matter how it's wasted... either to the right or the left. There's wasteful products on both sides of the aisle.

We have no money.
