This is a fairly interesting article. The basic premise is that existential security promotes a tendency to be less religious. It also correlates the countries with the least worry or existential threat to those who are the most developed in terms of welfare infrastructure...these countries also tend to be the most secular.
Anyway, it's interesting and seems worthy of discussion. I would just ask the article be read before attempting to discredit the source immediately...this article isn't overtly political.
a number of other basic cognitive traits have also been shown to promote religiosity. One very important one is having an intuitive style of thinking, as opposed to an analytic, contemplative style that favors in-depth, effortful thought.
At any rate, anything that promotes less religion will benefit us in the long run.
Most all religion is based off fear to keep people believing in it and following the horde mentality. The GOP propaganda machine does the same thing by instilling fabricated "the sky is falling" nonsense all the time to keep their sheep in line

Obama's 2008 campaign pointed out all these scary things Bush did...he couldn't do it again in 2012 because he endorsed all those Bush positions with actions.

Interesting article, although I disagree with the premise that religiosity is intuitive and built into our brains.
Religiosity is encouraged by the parents of children from infancy, and without that kind of "brainwashing", I doubt people are instinctively religious.
People may instinctively tend to look to be part of a group....herd mentality is built into our brains. Humans are social critters, after all, but I honestly don't think that the worship of Super-beings is part of our inborn psyche.

^^^^^^ The sheep accusing the non-sheep of being sheep.
humans have an innate capacity for belief. Whether it's Christianity, Islam, Spartacus youth league, or Cubs Fan, once the switch is flipped to 'on,' it is unlikely to turn off. Obamacare is hardly going to change that.
In any case Obamacare seems to be provoking more worry and unrest among most Americans. I know my union pals are concerned about what is going to happen to their benefits when their contract expires next year, so maybe Obamacare will create less atheists, not more.
Actually I always find it strange atheist think of the self as a group when the old 60's;whatever turns you on is more accurate. Now if they just don't assault each other to sign up.
