TechCrunch has learned about noted technology investor Tim Draper’s plan to split California into six separate states, including a Northern California slice appropriately named “Silicon Valley.”
Draper shared his vision with TechCrunch tonight. He says he’s submitting a polished version to the state’s Attorney General in the form of a ballot proposition proposal within the next 48 hours. “Six Californias” already has a campaign website up and is eager for an army of volunteers.
We’ve pasted the full ballot initiative below, along with the redrawn map of California. Essentially, the idea is to section off California into six horizontal slices, with Silicon Valley getting its own region stretching from the Sierras to the Bay Area beaches.
Some observations:
*Six? That's a lot. And they would be unusually unequal in size. The two new states carved out of Southern California would have over 10 million people apiece; the remaining four new states would divide up less than half the number of people those two states would share.
*This, as do all such proposals, will go absolutely nowhere. Congress and the legislature in Sacramento are not interested.
*A referendum? Pointless. Referenda play no legal role whatsoever in the creation of new states.
It would never work - the leftists on the coast would scream about being placed with those "evil conservative hicks" in the inland areas of the two northernmost proposed states, the red, orange, green states would immediately begin a cold war over water, and you will note that the river delta is on a border - that will cause a huge squabble.
California's problem's arise from it being run by liberals.
I don't imagine the good people of Marin would be interested in subsidizing the likes of Yuba and Sutter counties.
Ditto Orange County and the Inland Empire.
It's a silly idea, but if he wants to waste his own millions on it, good for him! At least he'll be creating jobs for signature-gatherers, sign-makers etc.
I love all these "split up states" proposals extremists throw around. It's never going to happen. What's on the media these days that seems to be subconsciously promoting the division and dissolution of the US since Bush?

exactly. texas is the only state that can legally split up without congressional approval.
