It very much was a top grossing show (top 5 comedy behind Seinfeld, Friends, and Roseanne). Even back in the mid-90s it had considerably more viewers than Duck Dynasty does now.

And there was no campaign.
There was a massive campaign. The Religious Right was even able to convince several ABC stations in the South to blackout Ellen in boycott. If you tried to watch the show, all you got was a blank screen for 30 minutes.

It's interesting that when Phil speaks he's exercising his freedom of speech but when GLAAD speaks they're "in a frenzy"

BOYCOTT
...
I like the idea of American people letting "them" know of our outrage.
However, be aware that A&E is owned by D$SNEY, as is ABC, L$FETIME, LucasF$lm, and host of other "famous names."
If you wish to boycott, boycott THE HEAD OF THE DRAGON... and kick it in its wallet.
...
Let D$SNEY know that you will boycott ALL THEIR PRODUCTS.

There goes their veneer of childlike innocence down the twerking drain...
If they ally themselves with Sodomites against Christians, they’re not “family friendly” anymore.

I never said he was a bigot. And for your education responding to something somebody said isn't intolerant. That's the trouble with you cons, if we don't agree with everything you say you accuse us of being intolerent

GLAAD said they represented the viewers and fans.

There's a difference when one person speaks his own opinion vs an activist group that say they speak for many.

If the cons are so damn tolerant of people saying things they don't like then why did they attack the Dixie Chicks? How come Martin Bashir doesn't have his job at MSNBC anymore? Why did Ed Schultz have to apologize?

Shoot, just saying "Happy Holidays" is seen by some to be an attack on Christianity.

Are conservatives his base? Some. Sure. Not all. I don't watch the show, and I don't agree with his view point. However; I do support his right to free speech. And quite frankly, the GQ interviewer asked about his views did they not? They asked, he told them. Again, I don't agree with his views, however; out of curiousity I just may check out an episode or two now, just to see what the fuss is all about.
