After thinking about it, this belongs in the controversies forum.

In the winter there are several holidays, including religious holidays and the celebration for the arrival of the New Year. In addition, the phrase holiday can also mean a vacation, or a break from work. When it's not a specific holiday (the 4th of July can be considered a holiday in the USA), but it's the time of the winter when school children and certain workers get time off, I wish them to have "Happy Holidays", referring to the time off for whatever celebration. On the day of the holiday I am not so obtuse to continue to say "Happy Holidays", and instead say "Happy *insert holiday here*".

...Yet people still take offense to the phrase "Happy Holidays". Am I an impolite and ignorant retard? Also, pardon me, English is not my first language.

Independence Day IS a holiday in the U.S. It's one of the few federal holidays, and it celebrates the birth of this nation. It's arguably the most important holiday in this country.

Default Why is "Happy Holidays" offensive?

Short answer: it's not.

Some psuedo-Christian fundamentalists make a career out of being offended so they can pretend to be persecuted. Makes them feel important and holier than thou, I suppose. So much phony outrage on the right these days.

Because people need something, anything, to fill their empty sad lives so might as well show some faux outrage over that.

There is nothing wrong with saying "Happy Holidays" and in fact, "holiday" comes from the words "holy" and "day" so there really should be no objection from religious people (although there might still be). Referring to yourself as a "retard" is probably much more controversial and you might want to reconsider your use of that word.

Lets face it saying "Happy Holidays" is pretty damn stupid but no one should take offense to it.

I think the primary 'upset' is when someone (ie, employer) says you shan't say Merry Christmas.

And, all the hoopla (ie, C-D threads!) brings some extra attention to it each year.

What I don't understand is how people don't understand how saying "Merry Christmas" to everyone is as big an ***hole-ish move as you can make?

It's like meeting someone and saying
"Well tell your son Bob I said 'Hi!'"
"My daughter's name is Mary"
"F#$ if I care. I'm still calling her Bob"
