All this talk of guns, burglaries, man eating bears and robberies is even making me paranoid. There goes any chance of a good night's sleep as I live alone. Thanks a lot!
Owning a tool that could remedy some of those problems may assuage some of your paranoia. Just knowing that you have taken steps to mitigate the problem may help you sleep better at night.
FYI: It is not "Spring" in Alaska until there has been at least one bear mauling and/or moose stomping.
I made the drive up there several times when I was younger. Beautiful country but it is also unforgiving if you aren't careful... I'm too old to do it now, but I might return one day as a tourist.
That has been a really odd thing. I will have lived in Alaska now for 23 years this coming May, and I have seen lots of bear, but all of them have been either grizzlies or brownies. I have never once encountered a black bear in Alaska.
I once spent a month in Glacier National Park in Montana hiking around the back-country and encountered black bears almost every other day, plus a couple of grizzlies. Yet not a single black bear encounter in almost 23 years in Alaska. Very odd indeed.

Very true. One little mistake can get you killed. A harsh winter (Oh, look! It's currently -4°F outside. ) and lots of big critters makes Alaska a very dangerous place to live, and we would not have it any other way!
That is odd... I assumed you had them as well. I come across them all across the northern US from time to time and I am told there are even some in Florida.

Actually the big critters don't bother me near as much as the two legged variety. They are much more dangerous. The big critters, you give them their space and leave em alone.

We do. There are a lot more black bears than grizzlies or brownies. I just have never personally encountered any, which is very strange.

I always try to give them their space and leave them alone, but I also carry a 44 Mag, Just in case.
