I only open carry indoors as a consequence of being outdoors. In other words, if I have a hunting, fishing, hiking, or other outdoor activity planned for the day, I always bring my firearms. If I then happen to eat breakfast at a restaurant or do a little shopping prior to going, or having some dinner out after I return, I leave the Mossberg in the vehicle and wear the .44 Mag openly in the establishment.
If I am not planning an outdoor event, I do not bother carrying.

A pilot had landed his plane at a small strip near a large grocery store in Anchorage. He walked to the store.
I was waiting in my car for my wife, who was in the store, when the pilot came out of the store.
Two police cars came into the parking lot. It was obvious that they knew him. I could hear the conversation and the police said something like; This is the second time this summer we have hadsomeone call on you packing in the store. We will be glad when tourist season is over.

I imagine with all the cell phones it must drive COPs crazy these days.
I hope that irrational phobia is primarily isolated to Anchorage. Every encounter I have had with Alaskan law enforcement while open carrying has always been about the types of firearms we both like, and which we thought were the worst. I have never been stopped simply for carrying a firearm.

My experience is about the same in Anchorage with the police. They are more interested in what you are carrying and what cool accessories you have. I think it would depend on what area of Anchorage you are in though.
There is a small private strip not too far from the Carrs Store on Huffman. Many times I see pilots go in the store open carrying. I think they often forget that they even have a firearm. Most times no one pays much attention. Occasionally a tourist or recent California transplant will call the police.

Carrs on Huffman used to be the best in Anchorage, before Safeway bought them out. I have been in there many times myself while open-carrying, although it has usually been very early in the morning before the tourons arrive. I like to stop there to pick up snacks before I make the drive down to the Kenai.
