It is true that Oregon is a politically liberal state which voted for President Obama.

The liberals are largely concentrated in the college towns and around Portland, the legislature is almost evenly split (I think the Senate is 16-14 and the House is 30-30). Over the past 10 years or so the governors have been winning fairly narrowly, certainly no landslides.

Neither have there been Democrat landslides in Oregon's neighbor to the north, Washington State.

In fact, at least two of the last three Washingtonian gubanatorial elections have been near deadlocks.

The Great Northwest is not quite the "liberal stronghold" that the socialist left claims that it to be.

It can go either way.

The events in rural, deep red Oregon should come as no surprise. These counties have been suckling at the federal government teat for decades, whining that the federal government killed logging (despite the fact that logging is still a major industry). In that time, they've seemingly done nothing. Josephine is a mess. Curry County is in a similarly dire situation. There too, the people choose to gut services rather than pay up.

They're ensuring their long term failure by turning their counties into places that no one would choose to live or do business.

Yet, people do live in Josephine and Curry Counties.

What is your point?

really, is that your solution? taxes and more taxes? is that all democrats ever come up with? cant fix the problem, so tax the people more and throw more bad money towards the problem. hell, that is why our country is going down the crapper, more tax money being throw at bad programs.
screw that, have the county cut every other department by 50% and add a few deputies, including the bureaucracy that the county elected officials are under.

He is saying that the problems in Josephine are self inflicted.

That is the solution for Josephine, if they want these services, then they should pay for these services rather than relying on others to foot the bill for them. I thought you cons were in favor of paying for your own services.

Didn't you get the memo? Paying is for poor people and those who live in blue areas. Red areas deserve all the free money they can gobble up.

To some extent yes. The logging decline did hit southern Oregon counties pretty hard (though not as hard as they'd have you believe). Their continuing problems and doomed economic outlook, however, are self inflicted. By refusing to fund basic services, they're ensuring that businesses will not come to the area. The only economic driver they have that seems to be doing even somewhat well is growing marijuana (hmm, maybe they really don't want police after all!).

Then Harrier should know that the "liberal part of Oregon is in the Northwestern 1/4 of the state and Josephene county is not located there.

In the early '90s Michigan has a kinda similar issue, where (mostly older) voters in the retirement-destination town of Kalkaska repeatedly turned down school millage requests, culminating in a very early shutdown of public schools when the money ran out.

The Republican legislative solution was to eliminate local school operating taxes and replace them with a nominal 6-mill permanent state education tax plus a 2% sales tax hike (from 4% to 6%) and a steep new nonhomestead tax on second homes, rental, and business property. The idea was to give homeowners a huge property tax cut without extending the same tax cuts to big business (Big Three) which would flow largely to out of state shareholders. In the process, landlords and tenants be damned, the nonhomestead tax on landlords largely negated the property tax cut, while the sales tax hike guaranteed that renters would end up keeping less of what they earned.

The Democrat me-too legislative solution was to increase the income tax instead of the sales tax - no surprise there! - with a larger state education tax and a smaller nonhomestead tax. Again, landlords and tenants be damned, with rental property taxes equal to the GOP plan, and renters keeping less of what they earned.

As a minority of legislators supported a moderate-level uniform property tax, neither party could get its proposal passed, and in the wee hours of Christmas Eve, legislators agreed to let voters decide, and in a light turnout special election on a snowy day, the mostly higher-income voters chose the Republican plan.

So if these people just think out of the box and choose the politically expedient winners and losers, they CAN find the money.
