There has been no correlation between gun violence and mental illness. So why is it allowed to permeate the gun debate? Both sides use it as a culprit.

Because it was handy as a distraction after Sandy Hook.

Of course, the second any state tries to enforce its laws banning the mentally ill from owning guns, the gun nuts go berserk. So it's pretty obvious that the whole thing is just a sham for them. No news there.

So, you are saying that someone(s) who murders 5 to 50 people,
most of them women and children, and shooting some of them 10
or more times each is sane?

Nah.

People use that in reference to the mass shootings. I don't know that stats on that but that's a different conversation from overall gun violence. If you want to talk about gun violence in general, then we need to talk about criminals who are repeat offenders and who often have stolen guns, but we're not ready to have that conversation because it doesn't feel as good as talking about guns.

YEP - the "gun violence" thingy only makes the headlines after a 'mass shooting', and all of those pretty have to do with the 'mental illness' factor. On the other hand - the 'gun violence' by gangs and thieves don't garner much attention at all.

The "pro-gun" or "anti-gun" agenda have nothing to do with either situation. Gangs and thieves are not going to get background checks or buy guns legally, and background checks don't have any way to "check" if the person who buys a gun is mentally ill.

The "gun debate" is whether American citizens should be allowed to own firearms - many people think that politicians and activists should be the ones to decide that. Many more people believe this was all settled in the Constitution of the United States.

Gun violence is caused by middle class folk with no criminal record that have magazines over 10 rounds, also pistol grips and collapsible stocks on their .223 caliber rifles locked in their gun safes.

Once we stop that menace, gun violence and shootings will end once and for all.
