I love dogs. I hate people who abuse dogs. But this stupid law is ridiculous and could easily harm more dogs than it helps. If you outlaw tethering, dog owners without a fenced yard will either keep the dog inside (bad for the dog) or let the dog run loose (bad for the dog and the public). But idiot lawmakers just have to tell people how to live their lives.

Mount Dora joins county in dog-tethering ban

MOUNT DORA — Dog tethering is now banned in the city, though residents have a grace period to make sure they are not in violation of the new rule.

City Council members recently passed the final version of the anti-dog-tethering ordinance, mirroring the Lake County ban passed in April. Mount Dora is one of only two Lake cities with its own animal-control services.

I don't have a problem with this. Too many dogs left to rot outside with owners who don't give a crap about them.

Ditto!!!!

This seems to be in the interest of dogs that are abandoned or left to stay outside in sweltering heat. Now if someone sees a dog tethered they can call the police. It could end up saving the lives of many dogs. Should be a state law.

That is a problem but I'm not sure this addresses it. The dog can be left outside just as easily without a tether. Depending on the situation, it might be more likely that the poor treatment of the dog will be reported if the neighbors see the dog left on its own on the tether versus if the dog is out of sight by wandering off etc. or if the dog is now neglected inside the house. I don't mind the intent, but I'm not sure that passing this law is going to be effective.

This will not stop people from leaving dogs outside.

And dogs can be humanely tethered. They are much better off than running around the neighborhood.

Agree. Tethering does not equal abuse.

Agreed. Things like this often come up when there are a couple of bad cases, so a politician decides to push a law then everyone feels good whether or not it addresses the actual problem or has any influence on it.
