If the same happens now, they will have died because of lack of coverage due to Obamacare being so screwed up. The doctors were going to admit the chest pain lady, but she was afraid that insurance wouldn't cover the bill since they couldn't locate her insurance. She had private insurance before that she trusted.
Obamacare has taken away her 'health security.'
Look, chest pain aside, most visits to the emergency department don't remotely come close to the concept of what a life or limb threatening emergency is, so I'm not buying the drama and tripe.

And it doesn't matter what kind of insurance or any at all...the ER is there to save you, not make your cold go away or diagnose your years-long chronic toe pain.

Chest pain lady left against everyone's better judgement. That was just stupid on her part.

My wife ended up in the ER about five years ago. After getting her checked in, I dealt with the admission clerk who verified insurance, collected my co-pay, and provided a summary of expected out-of-pocket charges. All before she saw a physician. I had a Kaiser plan.

And if there had been a paperwork snafu, you would have been advised of possible charges, as happened here.

The problem isn't the ACA, it's the f.cked-up private insurance system.

I don't understand.

How is letting you know up front what your likely financial responsibilities will be "f.cked-up"? Do you want to be surprised with your bill? These registration people are there to help you, btw. And they DO NOT talk to the doctors, no matter what your media-soaked brains think...no wallet biopsy is done by providers.

There is no chest pain or pneumonia lady. Let's do the math, shall we?

a) the story is a fake
b) the patients, unhappy with their outcomes in a US hospital, immediately contacted the
British tabloid press.
c) The UK Daily Mail has journalists stationed in the ERs of every hospital in every state, in the hopes of coming across someone who is unhappy and willing to talk.

I'm voting for A

Before moving here, I lived in 2 countries where the idea of getting a bill for an emergency room visit would have been considered utterly bizarre. One would be met by medical professionals, triaged and treated. In the process saving the salaries for those helpful registration people.

I've encountered both systems, and the US one is decidedly inferior.

You wanted this.
You wanted the government, who can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag, to take care of you.
And now they are so suck it up and live with the ramifications of your choice.

LOL at the OP. You do know that Reagan made it mandatory for emergency rooms to treat all people who come in regardless of insurance status or citizenship status right???

People leaving because of fear of not being able to pay is not the same thing as being denied due to Obamacare coverage. If it were me, I would have stayed at the hospital when I had chest pains. My life is worth any amount IMO. One can still file bankruptcy if they can't pay their bills you know. May be messed up, but it is true.
