California was admitted to the union as a free state in exchange for passage of the Fugitive Slave Act. This is known in U.S. History books as the Compromise of 1850. Now the roles are changed, California is no longer a free state. Its residents are slaves of the Democratic Party. Sadly, the GOP likely wouldn't be much better, but at least Californians would be free. Democracy exists to inhibit change. Breakup actually makes a bit of sense.

BREAK UP: Will California splinter into 6 states? Voters, Congress could soon decide - Washington Times

Good idea or bad idea? Who would benefit? Who would lose? Is it do-able? Would the feds interfere? (Consider that President Obama would be out of office if this actually happened so don't make his administration a reason for liking/not liking it.) Tell us if you are from California when answering.
the problem though is that california, or any other state, except texas, for that matter cannot break up without approval from congress. texas can break up into five states because of the treaty they signed to become a state.

Have you read the Declaration of Independence lately? Thomas Jefferson says Texas can do what it wants.

*SIGH*

Hey Republicans...if you wanna win those California electoral college votes, you'll just have to do it the old fashioned way. WORK HARD to get them by dumping some of the more ludicrous parts of your platform. Granted, that's about 85% of the platform, but whatever.

Stop dreaming about breaking up the state so as to dilute the electoral college in an effort to swing it in your favor.
