Since the start of the "war on poverty" in 1965, the United States has spent more than $5 trillion against the war on poverty. What we have received for this massive investment is -- primarily -- more poverty. Our welfare system is unfair to everyone: to taxpayers who must pick up the bill for failed programs, to the poor themselves, who are trapped in a system that destroys opportunity for themselves and hope for their children.

The Libertarian Party believes it is time for a new approach to fighting poverty. It is a program based on opportunity, work, and individual responsibility.

1. End Welfare
2. Establish a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for contributions to private charity
3. Tear down barriers to entrepreneurism and economic growth
4. Reform education

What, you feel it wrong to advertise their impending speeches on "Compassionate Conservatism", "GOP Empathy for the poor", "Major economic policy statements"?

So how might we restore LBJ's original mission in the war on poverty? First, as the economy improves, the government should require able-bodied, non-elderly adult recipients in federal welfare programs to work or prepare for work as a condition of receiving benefits. We should also reduce the antimarriage incentives rife within welfare programs.
There has never been a war on poverty. That is just plain old all American propaganda.

uh how much empathy is enough before we realize that it isn't working? 50 years is plenty of time, doing more of the same is insanity.

Compassion is saying if what we are doing isn't working we need to change what we are doing in hopes of helping them. But Libs think doing the same thing that has proven not to work is compassionate. Unbelievable.

I am sorry, I didn't realize you already know what they are going to say.

They were probably doing this type of trade in the back room with food stamps coupons too. But wouldn't it be nice to revoke someone's EBT card for blatant abuses like this?

That is indeed what happens. People can get life time bans for committing such fraud.

Higher education ruined America?
Nah, there's nothing anti-intellectual about the right.

Nah, political bias and partisanship, ideological propaganda, and inflating grades with the 'everyone gets a trophy' mindset, disguised as education... that is what was being referred to, I'm sure.

Welfare reform in the 90's required able-bodied recipients to work at least 20 hours a week.

The CATO Institute reports that about 80% of the jobs held by welfare recipients required to work were/are subsidized by some form of government. Ignoring the obvious, CATO went on to blast the recipients for not working full time. Guess they did not get the memo that makes clear that retail and food services have been the largest employment sectors in the U.S., since the 80's. Both sectors have historically hired part timers due because they want optimum scheduling flexibility and to avoid OT.

Most people employed in these sectors don't know their schedules more than a week in advance which makes it challenging to cobble together 2 or more part time jobs.
