I think unemployment insurance should last forever.
All of these extensions that must be voted on are only getting partisan politics in the way of people's lives. And most importantly, cutting off unemployment means thousands more people will become homeless. When you're homeless, you CAN'T get a damn job because employers want to see you have an address. And cutting off unemployment means reduced consumer spending, reduced revenues for businesses and landlords, and it's jus...t bad for the economy. It will increase poverty and crime. Not to mention, 75% of the unemployed are NOT currently collecting benefits. What does that tell you? It means that jobs are still very hard to come by for many people. Who cares if 15% of recipients are abusing it. The other 85% really need it. I don't believe in screwing everyone over just because a minority is abusing it. Furthermore, what about the MILLIONS of employed people who are abusing their paychecks by slacking off on the internet for a few hours a day at work? They're being lazy asses WHILE at work! That's even worse, because it's a lot more money and it's not a tax, but rather a DIRECT paycheck being abused!
Unemployment insurance is less of a replacement for wages than a guarantee of spending in the economy. Funny thing now is Republicans are arguing the economy is strong and we don't need it.
Theres been discussions about a guaranteed income idea that would eliminate unemployment. I cant see it ever getting serious unless switzerlands passes and works, or things continue to get worse.
I can't either -- which would make it excellent irony if it is.
The thing is, there really are people who are that lazy that they think they are owed a free ride for their entire lives.
I really hope that isn't what you truly believe.
Most people can't live on the unemployment that most states pay.
While NJ and PA's are high (over $580 per week) many are $250-300.
Who can live on that?
I'd rather have a lower crime rate and not have to worry so much about my home and vehicle being burglarized if it means extending unemployment for a few extra weeks. After all, people are going to find SOME WAY of getting money if they can't get jobs.

Actually, I think you missed the main point. Republicans typically are saying, 'if the economy has improved as much as the Obama administration is saying it has, there is no need to continue to extend unemployment benefits well past their normal parameters.'
I know of people choosing to be on unemployment. They do not look for a job and sabotage any efforts when they are forced to attempt to look for a job. How many years should someone be allowed to collect unemployment benefits? At some point you either get any job you can or go on welfare.
