Interestingly the conductor for the San Francisco Symphony said that Metallica's music was easily adaptable to the Symphony.

WI can't believe that you are arguing about what race started what.... What does it matter. Rock and Roll and now Hip Hop is American music and you don't have to have a particular color of skin to enjoy it. Heck, you dont even have to be American because many great hiphop and rock and roll artist are from the UK and Canada...

I've head this guy, Lord Jamar, talk about other subjects on youtube and he is extremely closed minded, ignorant, racist, and does not speak for the majority of people. Many blacks love white artist from all genres and white love hiphop, R&B, jazz, etc from both black and white artist.

Oh? Says who?

I can list more than a few black people "in power" who have outsized influence on, say, American fashion, which has its root in the western European tradition.

Be it music, fashion, entertainment, business....in the end, this is America, jack. All cultures in America influence, beg borrow and steal from one another, and then if it remotely has any chance of making money, it gets commoditized and sold.

How about this: We put "cultural appropriation" on the list of things that concern people who are not and will not ever actually be in a position to change the world and GET to a position of power because they think cultural appropriation is really a "thing" to be upset about.

Blacks as do have economic power. All races and both sexes do. Why would companies waste money targeting and advertising A.A. if they didn't bring something to the economic table?

But can you go to Mexico and tell Mariachi musicians how they should conduct their music?

Did Macklemore ever tell other rappers how they should conduct their music or did Lord Jamar just start a beef because he's white and had a pro-gay marriage song?

Yea I could, but just like the guy in the youtube video, it would be my lone opinion that's not worth a damn and no one would have to follow it... Anyway, who's trying to tell anyone how to conduct their music, and so what if they were?

Forget it, it's all freshman sociology/social justice crap 101. Perpetuated by people's whose very existence (often, their paycheck as well) is only ever validated by being "against" something. Social justice academia pimps. A distinct breed from those who actually work in the trenches to improve people's lives.

It's a very popular field among two groups of people: Young people "of color" (whatever that means), and young white people of a certain mindset who often enjoy the most privilege in life out of anyone.

Grown folk usually grow out of the OP's mindset. Those of us who actually grew up in diverse environments never usually bought into it at all. (Something about living with and around all types of people makes you realize how similar everyone is in the end). But if left to fester or if people start believing they are terribly clever or smart for parroting such view points it can be a lifelong affliction.

The only "appropriation" that should be discouraged is deliberate use of cultural aspects from other cultures in an offensive manner.

No, but if you want to start a Mariachi band made up of American black guys and move to Mexico and become hugely successful there, nobody would - or should - have a problem with it except those Mexican led bands who are butthurt that they can't move as many records.

What is it about being Mexican that makes someone INHERENTLY better or more suited to play Mariachi? Does one have to be Scottish to play the bag pipes? Going to feed us some nonsense about cultural memory next?
