Yakima Herald Republic | Yakama Nation says it won

The Yakama Indian tribe, which controls about 20 percent of land in Washington state, wants nothing to do with the new legalization of pot. They say marijuana has been very damaging to their youth, They say that their 1855 treaty with the US gives them the power to keep marijuana off of their land, and that they intend to do just that.

The author of the initiative to legalize marijuana, an ACLU attorney, begs to differ. Where will WA Democrats come down on this? Support their newfound buddies the pot smokers, or their long time allies, the noble tribes? Sometimes there are wrinkles with identity politics. Anyway kudos to the Yakama nation for not accepting every new trend and fashion that comes along.

Meh. If they want to keep the failed policy that is marijuana prohibition, it's their loss.

Whatever!!! Pot is grown and sold like crazy on Native American reservations! Of course these people don't want it legalized. They bank off of it and one of their cash cows will be gone if you can start buying roaches in convenient stores. The nerve of some people.

Their youth have addiction issues and keeping pot illegal isn't going to save them. But nobody has to grow it on their land...although they do, but say they don't. But they do.

They'll probably turn on the pot smokers, who have been their enemies in the past.

Either that, or they'd adapt a terra nullius position of denying tribal rights or abolishing them. In recent years this position has been most associated with Sarah Palin but it was the most common position in 19th and early 20th century America, and a position that the state of Washington held well into the 1950s.

Don't know their traditions or current culture but if its their land they should be able to create the laws.

I'm also ok with special rights granted to tribes who use mind altering substances for spiritual purposes (Peyote). I believe we should grant tribes autonomy for the most part.

I complete agree. Their land, their culture, their right. As long as they're simply practicing their culture and it isn't hurting anyone, the rest should simply stay out of it.

Yet the Native Americans sell their land to non-natives and this is were the problem begins.
