I jay walk when I visit America. I'm quite capable of crossing a road without getting myself killed. I don't need to be herded to a crossing point. As someone else said, pedestrians can stand for ages waiting for permission to cross at traffic lights.
When we visit Las Vegas, there is a road just in front of the Fremont Street canopy. The lights allow you to cross every couple of minutes or so. The cars only come from one direction, and visibility down this straight road is very good. Even with no traffic in sight down this road, folks stand there waiting for permission to cross from the 'Cross Now' light. Huh? We stand there like idiots waiting for permission to cross, with no traffic in sight...... it's ridiculous! I cross if I see no traffic...... as I do, other folks seem emboldened by my doing so, and some cross with me!! Come the revolution..........

No one is waiting for permission.. some people prefer to walk across the street when the light changes. It's not that serious.

Americans have become stupid.
In the big cities, we don't wait for crossing signals. We get to where we need to go. At least in Chicago and New York.
It's not routine to see someone get a ticket for jaywalking. In fact, I have NEVER seen someone get a ticket for jaywalking.
I think he means population percentage wise. Like he says, no jay walking laws here. We don't like being told what to do!
No doubt he is thinking of the revenue. They do this all the time in Seattle; there have been a few news stories about jaywalking crackdowns over the years. I remember reading one guy who said that a cop drove half-a-block the wrong way down a one way street on a motorcycle to give him a jaywalking ticket. Now just ask yourself how many people you hear about getting killed on motorcycles vs. jaywalking each year, and you realize how abjectly disingenuous the jaywalking issue is. They're lying through their teeth, as usual.
In a place like NYC, where jaywalking is ingrained into the culture, imagine the fine revenue they could bring in with jaywalking crackdowns. But they must bamboozle the voters into accepting it.
