Advertisements

One of my hobby horse issues is the potential havoc to be wrecked by government deployment of advertising. We all know how powerful advertising can be, and how insidious it can be. At least as an individual consumer, you have the power to reject it, to not fall for it.

But what if the advertising emanates from a government source? Now if 50%+1 fall for a sales pitch, now you are in on the deal too, like it not. No matter what flim flam is behind it, if 50%+1 say 'YEAH!" you effectively just said yeah as well.

One of the things that drove me crazy about the W Bush admin was their 'anti drug' ads. They even had one on the Super Bowl, costing taxpayers over $3 million. But generally gov't advertising has proceeded at a desultory pace. That is about to change big time, due to Obamacare.

Obamacare by Olympics, Rappers, and Hollywood Elites, Oh My! | Wendy N. Powell

They are going to launch an ad campaign to air on the Winter Olympics. They're recruiting celebs from various fields to do ads. They've already got a deal to pay the Baltimore Ravens $130,000 to promote Obamacare (ironic given the health issues linked to NFL football).

The day that Madison Ave. and Washington DC meet in an unholy alliance is the day we lose the republic. That day may be upon us.

Its funny there is a need to encourage the purchase of a product that carries a penalty for not purchasing it in the first place.

I don't see how you are trying to connect advertising to 1984. Advertising is nothing new, political campaigning is also a form of advertising.

The law says you must purchase, why advertise?

Funny. I am somehow reminded of the amazing sales job done on the Iraq war. Of course, the media were very happy to provide that little favor pro bono.

And? Is there a law that says if it is a law then you must not advertise. You must wear your seat belt, but there is advertisements about it. You must not drink and drive, but there are advertisements.

Guess I am not buying your fake outrage on this one.

So you use other examples of idiocy to support this one, good plan

That is the point of examples, those are all laws that also advertise, so you are just showing fake outrage and it is purely laughable.

apples and oranges. We're talking here about paid advertising, the same kind used to sell cars, soap, jewelry, pet rocks, etc. We're talking about a joining at the hip of Madison Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue.
