From their perspective, why not? The government will just pick up the tab with Medicaid or deeply subsidized exchange plans, so it won't even hurt the workers in question that much, just the public.

This shouldn't be surprising at all, and I think we can expect employers to over time drop coverage for most employees making low enough income to qualify for the subsidized cost-sharing silver plans. In this way the ACA represents in part a massive transfer of money from taxpayers to large corporate employers of badly paid workers who currently (or formerly, in these cases) offer health benefits.

The cost of Obamacare don't enter into it. The fact that their insurance for part-timers is a joke does.

Target doesn't have to provide any of their employees with medical insurance, they offer it to part timers (who have to pay an arm and a leg if they want it) per their own company policy and it's a terrible plan. Most of Target's 361,000 US employees are part-timers and most of them don't purchase the insurance Target offers them, because it's expensive and terrible (according to the article, only 10% of their part-timers sign up for it).

I didn't whine about how much they made. I pointed out how much they made in response to the charge that they would have to raise their prices if they wanted to provide employees with health insurance that meets the Obamacare standard.

The article says it is for the people already making under 30 hours, which amounts to about 10% of the people they employ, and that no one is getting their hours cut. Also the article mentions that everyone that is losing their insurance will be given $500 to help signing up for ACA. I am guessing they felt their part time employees could get a better healthcare insurance coverage than they are getting now.

So, nothing's changed, eh?

With the advent of Obamacare, they still have the opportunity to buy a terrible insurance policy that's expensive and a complete joke (a $10,000 deductible for someone making $12,000/year?).

Only difference is, now the employees are FORCED to buy it, or pay large penalties to the government.

Doing what they are doing, is entirely within the new Obamacare law, so the leftist fanatics must have had it in mind, right?

Or are you telling me they goofed?

They likely can, and for less cost to Target too. Win-win for Target and its workers; but a loss for everyone in America putting in paperwork to Uncle Sam this April.

You have obviously never worked in retail or understand the giant loophole in the law that would allow a part timer to work 40+ hours a week and still be considered a part timer.

Key Words ; "work load planner","assets", "payroll".

You are right - they could eliminate their dividend, their sinking funds, and other budgetary responsibilities....that would do wonders for their business.

Their 4.09% profit margin is short of the 9 to 11% national average. Perhaps they should have no profit margin? That would be sweet.

Apple on the other hand is "hip" - their 21.68% profit margin and $37 Billion profit is great, because most of their employees are indirect employees living in FoxCon barracks in the people's Republic of China.
