Republicans were instrumental in ending both slavery and segregation.

Republicans were the ones who championed women's suffrage.

You should re-read some history books.

Yep, Progressive Republicans and Democrats ended slavery, segregation, and championed women's suffrage. And we are seeing this happen today as Progressive Republicans and Democrats lead the way in making gay marriage legal across the country.

Can they do it without changing the meaning of words?

I love my country. Served and bled for my country and I have no regrets in that regard.
This country is like watching your child who was so successful turn into a drunkard who throws his check away on 2 faced friends and bad bets. You love him, but it kills you to watch it happen.
The USA tries to buy loyalty from countries who hate us. We squander our wealth on others who do nothing but betray us. WE are led by corrupt politicians who have lost all fear of lying to us. So many Americans treat voting like a popularity poll.
We have money to waste on crap holes like Afghanistan, but don't have the money to build our own infrastructure.
WE continue to grant most favored nation status to China, a country that wants nothing more than to see us fail.
We have High School graduates that can't do basic math in their heads, read above a 4th grade level, and think that they are owed a living.
We have adults who wait for their monthly check from the Gov and complain that it isn't enough. They don't complain that they don't do enough for themselves.
What I am proud of is that we do take care of our truly disabled. We have the freedom to move as we see fit. WE have the freedom to complain about our government. We have the freedom to aspire to greatness and the ability to actually achieve it. Our President is living proof that this is true.
If we are to be a great Nation again we must learn to mind our own business and focus within. We have so many problems that need to be addressed. WE simply can not afford to squander away any more of our future.

What change in words are being made? My wife and I got a straight marriage, just like we would have been able to do before gay marriage and last time I checked, our marriage still means the same thing.

My comment was that I grew up in a great country, but that country is gone now. I think it has changed for the worse.

What are your thoughts about what the country was and what it is now?

We're on a downward slope.

Looking from the outside in?

Absolutly. Needs some work, but nothing some honest elbow grease won't take care of.

You bet it is.

Not perfect, but a great country for sure.

I look forward to the changes the young ones will make to this country. I am not impressed by the idealists turned greedy whiners that the boomers turned out to be. The most selfish generation in our history.

I suspect the next generation will be better.

And besides it looks like pot will be legal. Would be nice to sit on my back porch, playing my guitar, with a nice plat of "green brownies" to help while away the hours.

It's a stereotype that you partisans on the right fall so often for, and for no reason. It's funny, you live in MD, I live near MD, and most of the people making over $100,000 down there are also liberals. Why is that, Trace? I thought all liberals were welfare junkies?

as a liberal, you seek to force others to believe in what you want for others. even if those liberals making more than 100k a year are true, I do not see them putting up 90% of their paychecks in order to pay for more government.

I would prefer a smaller government and a smaller military as well, and term limits for all political offices and judges.
