Gun owners beware: DC man faces jail for having empty shotgun shell - BizPac Review
Quote:
A successful Washington, D.C. businessman with a spotless criminal record is preparing to go to trial for possessing a single, misfired and inoperable shotgun shell in his own home.

When Mark Witaschek isn’t working as a financial adviser, he enjoys hunting. Unfortunately for him, he also lives in a city with gun control laws so draconian, possessing an empty shell casing is punishable by one-year incarceration and a $1,000 fine, according to The Washington Times.

His firearms are kept at his sister’s house in Virginia. The shotgun shell he kept at home as a keepsake — something to remind him of an incident that occurred during a hunting trip.

The craziest story I heard was a guy traveling from Utah to Pennsylvania on a plane with a layover in NJ. He checked his gun as required, the plane was late getting to NJ and he missed the connecting flight. It wasn't that far so the airline was going to bus them to their final destination, maybe like an hour ride. His bags never made it onto the bus so he got off the bus collected his bags and stayed at a nearby hotel, when he went to get on the plane in the morning and check his bags with the gun they arrested him . I think he spent like 2 weeks in jail before they released him and it took him 3 years to get his gun back.

I learned ny lesson about supporting "reasonable" gun laws in the 90's, they pushed for background checks here in PA which by itself is not a very unreasonable law. The fee is only a few bucks and it's instant, I can live with that. Despite language in the bill specifically forbidding that information from being used to build a gun registry that is exactly what the state police did. They successfully argued in court since it doesn't include all guns it's not a registry.

The full story, on the Washington Times is here.

MILLER: D.C. businessman faces two years in jail for unregistered ammunition, brass casing - Washington Times

they found more then that, an entire box of ammunition.

To me, it's silly.

Also to me, this proves what I've said for years, unnecessary search and seizure based of a eyewitnesses story is ridiculous. They'll break down your door for one thing, then look for anything to avoid a lawsuit.

I hope he wins his case. DC law is pretty straight forward, although I disagree with it. They found an entire box of rounds in his home

Common sense gun control is:

Reducing the amount of criminals.

...Let's work on that first, shall we?

You would think the police in a city plagued with real crime would have better things to do than waste time and resources prosecuting someone for having a single spent casing--especially since it is the only place in the entire US that this is a crime.

Absolute insanity. It's funny too because its places like this where T-Dawg gets out AGAIN in 3 years for armed robbery with 4 previous arrests and incarcerations. SMH

unregistered ammo? I never heard of such a thing. the feds should take back civilian control and make dc only a federal district once again, with no representation at all in the house.

It's not about common sense gun control. The Bloombergs and Feinsteins want to deter and/or make firearms unavailable to EVERYONE.

The Gun Owners Protection Act should have prevented that. Signed into law by Reagan in the 80's.

good luck with that one, the state I now live in has a firearm possession rate of over 90%, even the dems here carry and use firearms.
