So sad the article did not say by whom. We were told---. He is the head of the FCC. Was he compelled to comply?

I'm getting damned tired of subsidizing other folks life choices. If they want to live in a rural area, why should urban folks pay for their phones? This has been going on since before I was born.

I also wonder how many telecommunication companies are doing serious lobbying for this benefit. The only way to defend ourselves from their attempts to expand their business is to buy their stock.

What is Obamaphone?

Do you mean the Safelink Wireless first offered to low income people in 2008, before Obama was elected?

Or perhaps you mean the landline subsidy that was created in 1996 in the Telecommunications Act?

Or perhaps you mean the original Lifeline created in 1984?

Go way back to 1934. It was enacted to provide service to remote areas. Kinda like the TVA and electricity. Updated in 96 and 08.

Since landlines will be gone in 2020, the providers need to have another source of income.

Since this guy was a Senator Mitchell appointment, I still wonder who told him to keep quite and why did he. That part was left out.

IMO, the article was much ado about nothing, again.

Conservative superpacs and media have milked the Obamaphone for all its worth.

Seems a lot of people accept sensational headlines / political soundbite when it validates their perceptions.

Worth milking until someone does something about it and a lesson learned is posted to prevent further abuse, waste and coverup.

Whining about it on an Internet forum is not going to compel Congress to take action.

In terms of the challenges faced by the US, how is it possible that cell phones for low income people even registers?

The crappy pass through tax created jobs for US people.

Don't like the tax, give up your phone.
