Once upon a time it may have been about public safety, but now it's mainly about making money. .
If that were the case why have police depts at all just hike every ones taxes to make the money the cops were supposedly bringing in.
DUI punishments should be immediate impounding of the car,$10'000 fine, a month in the county jail and drivers license suspended for a year,,Second offense gets tougher. Some countries really take it seriously= http://webpages.charter.net/ricknet/duilaws.htm

For the same reason why speeding fines increased and Republicans run against taxes.
Cars are better made today, and far more capable of driving safely at 80 or 90. Yet, many states it's still 70 max. Fines, on the other hand, have radically increased. Or they hit you with "court cost" which is 150 dollars of a 170 total fine.
I've long said that if someone drinks and drive, that should not be illegal. If they hit someone, or cause damage to property, they should be punished according to their crime. Run a 7 year old kid while drunk, death penalty.
Why should "being drunk" have anything to do with the sentence? The is the same as stupid "hate crime" laws that elevate incidents just because of what is in the perps head at the time.
Millions of people drive drunk or buzzed every year and get home without incident. No harm. No foul.

It shows gross negligence.
I don't think anyone should be arrested for driving drunk, but if you hurt a child while doing it, the penalty should be swift and harsh.
Good answer. I bet almost everyone posting in this thread has driven at least tipsy at one point or another. The problem is people who don't know their limit. I'd rather deal with a generally responsible driver who's had a few than an absentminded teenager texting.
I have not.
I have never been pulled over for a traffic violation and have never rec'd a parking ticket. Police rarely hassle people who obey the laws, regardless if one agrees with those laws. Funny how that cause and effect thing works.
