In the inner cities versus several decades ago, it is. Of course, high school dropout rates are incredibly high there, drug use is high, alcohol abuse is high, ex cons are the norm, marriage is rare, and the mailboxes need 7 different last names for the mom and her kids. Causation!
Too many people don't have the patience to do anything that requires time and work anymore.
Everyone wants instant gratification along with freedom from responsibility for their own actions.
Too many people think some jobs are beneath them and aren't willing to learn a trade, start at the bottom and work their way up.
Not everyone can or even should go to college but that doesn't mean that they are doomed to a life of burger flipping or ditch digging.
Believe it or not, it is still possible to work your way to the middle class in America but it's not going to happen overnight and some people just can't accept that.
So there are enough jobs for all poor people to move up? I have yet to have answer to this because is seems to be avoided when I ask it? There are only x amount of higher paying jobs. Some one has to do these jobs.
And what should those individuals be doing for themselves?
Most large companies and factories offer a large number of courses to build employee skills. Skills that can be used in other places. I know I have taken advantage of them. I was hired to be a machine operator. I took courses and worked with line mechanics to learn industrial mechanics. I took courses on pneumatics and Hydraulics. I learned to weld and fabricate parts on a lathe. I made myself more valuable, not only to the company, but as an individual.
I have been offered a job as far away as Thailand to be a maintenance specialist in a factory that makes extruded aluminum products. I make paper towels now.
My point is some people endeavor to always improve themselves and some trust in fate. I can go to any factory that uses automated equipment and I have the skills to be desirable. I know a lot of people where I work that if the company closed the gates, they would be ruined. They are lazy. They make no attempt to be anything more than the absolute minimum, they complain about everything. They spend more energy avoiding a task than it would have taken to just do the job.
Not all unemployed are like these people, but no doubt a good many are. So the question is what should people as individuals be doing other than relying on Government generosity to support them?
By the way I agree we as a modern society have an obligation to help the least of us. Where we differ is on who the least of us are. The least of us are those who have no ability to fend for themselves. The truly disabled. Those born unable to ever be independent. Those injured and unable to fend for themselves. We need to take care of these people, have compassion. Those who refuse to adapt? Improve themselves? Relocate? make hard choices? Work more than 1 job? No we don't owe them much.
Guess what many people have gotten more skill and they are still working low wage jobs .I am sure you are right some people are lazy and make no attempt but do not confuse people who are lazy and people who just can not do more then min wage and yes there are people like that I have worked with many of them.
I've been reading a lot about these people struggling to make ends meet because they can only earn MW.
Often, these people are single with kids, dropped out of school, etc, etc. Basically, they made a lot of bad choices in life and now they're upset that their skills are only good enough for MW.
I understand that you might not be able to afford everything you want, but when people make dumb decisions, those often come with consequences.
The biggest being, don't have kids if you can't afford them!
I'm sorry, not trying to be insensitive or non-empathetic, but there's something called 'personal responsibility' that way too many people in this country don't seem to grasp.
The term "bad choices" or "made the wrong choices" is said by Rush radio and Fox news. The greedy CEO's who control Rush radio and Fox news are against high min wage laws, against workers unions, against healthcare for all, ex.ex.
So to excuse the above immoral and unjust behavior Fox, Rush, and republicans say "people who have low paying jobs made the wrong choices" or "people who don't have health insurance made the wrong choices."
Republicans don't want to increase min wage laws or give everyone health insurance, but they sure as hell want things like this,
Plus Fox news and Rush radio philosophies are pure BS. Plenty of people have min wage jobs because its the only job they can get.
Many poor black people in New Orleans can not afford cars, they are stereotyped as low class citizens, while they are forced to use city buses as transportation. And to make a long story short, "many poor black Americans can (not) find any job besides one making min wage."
And many other Americans who were not blessed with high intelligence, or blessed with good social skills are also forced to have min wage jobs. Just imagine a slightly retarded American looking for a job, many of them will only be able to hold a job like a buggy clerk at a grocery store.
Its republicans who "made the wrong choices", when they decided to not love, not respect, and attack their fellow Americans who work min wage jobs when its the best these Americans can do.
How many jobs in McDonald's , Wendy's or Dairy Queen? Enough for everybody? Not likely.
Many will have to find jobs in other places that pay less than $10 / hr.
The only people working minimum wage here in Austin and I bet even they are making more than minimum, are the illegal alien parasites, here for the welfare state.
About 3 years ago, they cracked down on the illegals working in restaurants.
One day, all the illegals you could barely understand, were gone from Taco Bell and the Wendy's, near my house.
So there are enough jobs for all poor people to move up? I have yet to have answer to this because is seems to be avoided when I ask it? There are only x amount of higher paying jobs. Some one has to do these jobs.
Not all do. Not all are motivated. Visit any inner city, the Land of tons of bad choices, and few who made good choices.
Is your above statement a joke, an attempt to upset me, or a statement written by someone with -0- knowledge of American history?
Chad.
