My marriage license says nothing about a three way with the government. I am pretty sure it is just a legal document that binds my wife and I together. Just like your license plate on your car doesn't mean you are in bed with your government, it just means your car is legal to drive on public roads.
The "government shouldn't be involved in marriage" argument is increasingly the refuge of those who are not comfortable with gay marriage being recognized by the government.
Most people who are against gay marriage fail to recognize that marriage is sort of like two people getting together to start a business.
Two people can run a business just fine without formally entering into a corporation, an LLC, PLLC, partnership agreement, etc. They can make contracts on their own on how they want to run things and have them enforced in court if necessary.
BUT, many do enter into one of those arrangements which have specifically been created by law to allow ease of business, tax benefits, and to order profit sharing and what do when the business is ended.
Frankly, we'd have an awful hard time saying, "business partnership agreements under chapter (whatever) are only allowed to be entered into between individuals of opposite sex."
Marriage is essentially the same thing, at its core. The government has created a scheme governed by statute which confers automatic privileges and responsibilities towards another person. Tax benefits, immunities in court, etc. can all hinge on whether or not you have that marriage license. Just as in business, how you are treated in certain situations can be dependent on whether you are an LLC, Corp., or sole proprietor.
Honestly though, those that believe "government should get out of marriage" are usually all for government blessing LLCs, Corps., etc. for business.
Many of us have been married for years, but not LEGALLY married. I know couples that have been together in a committed relationship for 30+ years without any marriage certificate.
I do too, including people I love. We should have long ago changed the government portion to civil unions for all and been done with it.
Why is the tone of your post directed towards only gay people?
Do straight people believe marriage is a three way inclusive of the government? Why does the straight lifestyle push straight people into marriage with the government?
For comparison, think of all the conservatives who say that they don't smoke pot because . . . it's illegal.
That particular mindset seems to believe that if smoking marijuana were to became legal, they would be mandated to smoke it, and they would gladly comply.
They would get higher off exercising the law, than they would off of the smoking of the pot per se.
Seems some people need religion to make them "good people" - while others need government to make them "good people".
Christians freak out when you ask them to cite from the Bible where pot is prohibited.
I wonder how many Christians believe that eating apples pisses God off.

My family and my spouses family have considered us married long before even Massachusetts had same sex marriage. We met in 79 and next summer will be our 35th year together. Married legally since 2008.

So, did you hold back on getting married just for the fun of it, or was there some other reason you didn't get married before 2008?
Have Gays Been Holding Back On Getting Married Until It Becomes Legal?
No. Gay couples have been getting married in churches and otherwise private ceremonies for decades in places where the state refused to recognize their marriage civilly.
