I'd be MORE worried about the out of control Black on Black crime than what some racist NON "Black" thinks about watermelon. Sheesh!
Oh hush. You people find anyway to flip it back on to blacks as if we're oblivious to issues within the black community. Black on black crime isn't the topic at hand. Quit derailing with your shady remarks.
I'm curious though do Southern Whites make these kind of claims about Blacks? I live in Southern MD and I see lots of Whites eating at Popeyes etc.
Maybe this is an example of Northerners or Coastal elites sneering at Southerners.
The thing is, in the south it wouldn't have been seen as "black food." It wouldn't have been an issue, but in california there isn't a perspective that soul food and southern food are the same thing...and it reinforces stereotypes.

In the south that is food to both white and black, and a lot of brown.
It is not associated with a black only stereotype, in the south.
Now the blacks that move north & west and still eat what they liked from the south. They then get that stereotype added to just them, like it is a handicap.
As an Italian your opinion on what black folk should be offended about doesn't really matter. I don't know why white folks always have an opinion on what should or shouldn't be offensive to black folk... You can have an opinion until you're blue in the face and OUR perception about what is acceptable and what isn't won't change one bit!!!

Thanks, I meant wouldn't. You exactly clarified it. In the west it is different.

Both of you are naive. I actually live in the South and have so my entire life. Yes, it is considered black food(not the fried chicken, but greens and cornbread).
You can go into a family owned restaurant and here white people ask for the cook , and say out loud "White people cant cook greens or cornbread, so i will pass on it"
just to be clear, a stereotype and racism are not one in the same. This is indeed a stereotype and yes, it does flow into the south as well.
I feel like I'm the only one who understands what the outrage is about. I am going to put this supinely. As a Black person, I would never eat watermelon in public, ever. Too many stereotypes tied to it. I don't like being stereotyped. Bad enough that stereotypes are used. I don't want to feed into it. I can understand the stereotypes because it is looked at from the perspective of "there are already stereotypes out there about us. We don't need this feeding into it".
Oh, I wish people would just eat whatever they want and refuse to be bothered by what others think. If some pea-brained white person looked down on you for eating something that he probably also eats, then f*** him. Who gives a rat's ass what he thinks? I didn't even realize it WAS a stereotype anymore. If it still is, it's mild in comparison to the much more insidious stereotypes of blacks you see nowadays.
It's offensive because watermelon invokes the image of the "Coon" or "Sambo", which was very effective in informing public opinion that blacks were vacuous, savage fools who were content with their subservience and thus undeserving of equality.

Your "people" need to take care of business, we don't owe you a thing. Respect is earned. Tho the decent Black dudes I DO feel bad for because of the hood rats trying to keep them in the crab pot.
