Under Operation Wetbacks, the idea was to get them to self deport, keeping their families together and save the tax dollars.
Those they did deport were put on a slow boat to south Mexico.
It worked really well and very little taxpayer money was spent on the program.

INS gave that estimate...never proven to have happend. The numbers deported were actual persons deported.
