Much of the anti-immigration sentiment in the US is racism disguised as "concern for the environment".
Bottom line: ILLEGAL aliens of ANY skin color DON'T have any right to be in ANY country. Switzerland has the RIGHT who they let in or not let in. Sheesh!

Gun ownership vs. increased regulation, like smoking, seems to cross politictial lines.

If the constitution permitted national referendums I suspect a majority would support increased gun regulation and a national ban on smoking, just about everywhere, regardless of partisanship.

I have no horse in either race.

Almost all Americans are descended from immigrants.

Not on this forum. It also allows you to bring up topics no one else might have thought of. I don't know why you want to stifle discussion, anyway.

the white conservatives want us to stop all non white immigration in the US though, which means they want to turn us into a population pyramid of japan.

japan has a population of 127 now, by 2100 they'll be down to 84 million. they keep moving at that pace japan will be gone in 500 or so years. i always bring that up when white conservatives males talk about immigration.

The people voted on this. They told their government "No more" and their government is listening to them.
That's the way to run a government..for the benefit of the people that live there.

Now the rest of the EU has their panties in a wad because..well because it's just "not fair".

Please justify your statement. What exactly do conservatives do that shows they want to export all the work to China?

To control or regulate jobs in the US we could:

- regulate the flow of workers into the US
- remove incentives for employers to stash money outside the US (to avoid taxes)
- stop protecting high wages for low skill jobs so the overseas labor cost advantage is diminished
- add tariffs to goods manufactured overseas
- reduce the number of people going to and graduating from college with degrees in fields with poor job prospects

The left hasn't shown they want to do any of these things.

We don't have many votes like that where the people vote directly on issues. It is a different political system.

It is becoming a good example to NOT sigh such treaties in the first place.
They signed Schengen AND several other bilateral agreements, which allow limitless immigration from EU member states.

DEA - Bilateral agreements Switzerland-EU

They chose to cancel freedom of movement (part of the Bilateral Agreement I of 1999) and jeopardized all the other bilateral benefits. Technically, this vote had NOTHING to do with Schengen. The EU may cancel the Schengen agreement, though, which is part of the Bilateral Agreement II of 2004, because both agreements are intertwined.

Nobody knows the outcome of all of this, especially none of the typical SVP voters, who initiated all of this.

Funnily enough, most of the regions with low unemployment and a low percentage of foreign employees (the east) voted Yes on the issue. Regions with higher unemployment and a high percentage of immigrants (the west), with the exception of Tessino, voted No. That doesn't really make sense to me and leads me into thinking that most of the Yes voters just have a grudge against the Germans and Italians... Not a good reason to jeopardize the whole economy.

We do at the state level.
Haven't you ever voted to change your state's constitution via amendments ?

They are upset because they can't spread the cost of supporting deadbeats anymore.
