The funny part is, I can just imagine that he's read his marching orders to go out and "spread the word" and therefore immediately rushes out and says he's he's instructed to say - never once questioning the veracity of his bosses.
At this point, he has two choices... realize he's being lied to and reject the liars... Or embrace the lie and become a liar (someone who knowingly says things that are false) himself.
I suspect he's chosen the latter, but it will be interesting to see what the next post (if any) from him is. If i'ts anything BUT a mea culpa, well, you know the answer.
