Morality is written on our hearts. That's why we feel guilty doing stuff we shouldn't even when we don't get caught.

Yes, I know. I was merely trying to forestall the inevitable claim that the Rape of Nanjing nullifies any right the Japanese might have to being considered a "modern, civilized" people -- what with 99% of them being heathens and all.

How can anyone be free with the Ten Commandments as law?

- It outlaws other religions
- Outlaws images of certain things or people (each denomination choose what that is it seems)
- Can't say certain things or be put to death
- Can't work on Sundays/Saturdays depend on denomination (no exemption for emergency services or places to eat after church services)
- Always obey your mother and father on punishment of death no matter what they say
- Can't sleep around, and depending on denomiation that can be anyone while married or not no matter what the spouse did
- Can't lie...which I htink is good, but certainly curtials the parts of the first amendment left over after outlawing other religions and speaking the lords name in vain
- Don't covet, well...good advice, but sounds like thought police and not really something taken as a freedom

It certainly doesn't comment about things like rape, throwing acid in some one's face, legal contracts, pollution, making sure people are licensed to practice medicine...

It's "freedom" to dominionist loons for about a week till everything breaks down, or some one gives them 2 shekles for raping their daughter.

Besides, morality doesn't come from religion.

You go back a few generations and somebody was religious enough to learn the 10 commandments.

Thou shall not lie, steal, kill (blatantly for no reason), and thou shalt take care of your babies are three necessities for society to exist. Without them, there can be no civilization. That they happened to be in the Ten commandments is not unique. They are in every law system, written or unwritten.

Generations? Or the road of hard knocks?
Morals are a man made concept, passed down from generation to generation and ever-changing as they go. There is no such thing as morality in nature, no objective morality exists. There are no absolute standards of morality. Morality does not exist outside of your mind.

There are no good acts, there are no bad acts, there are only acts. It isn't until society assigns a value to them that they become good or bad.

And you go back enough generations and the 10 commandments didn't exist yet. Although somehow civilization still functioned...

Bingo.

Lets use the Bible for example: It used to be legal and moral to beat your slave within an inch of his/her life, as long as they got up after a couple days you were good with God.

Nowadays we know slavery is bad times.
