why are you surprised by that? california is a huge diverse state and southern california (sans LA county) was a conservative stronghold until recently.

Well, Cape Coral, FL was on my list of places to consider moving to later this year. It just came off my list.

Surprised, because the State as whole is considered very liberal.

The population centers are very liberal (sf Bay Area and LA) but the rest of the state is conservative.

It is not really about where the biggest cities are located, it's about how much of the state's population is in cities versus in smaller towns. It's also about the characteristics of the cities. Are union jobs big there? Is the minority community big there? Is the religious community big there? Are jobs in the energy industry big there?

You're not going to see a lot of coal miners voting for Obama. You're not going to see a lot of automobile workers voting for Romney.

So it is normal for a blue city to be sitting in the middle of an otherwise red state, and for a blue state to have spots of dark red. It depends on various local conditions.

What about Jacksonville Florida, perhaps the largest conservative city in the South East?

Yes, I think the city had to have a certain number of people in order to be on the list.

Well, number 4 most conservative city on the list is Hialeah, which is an all Latino city (92% speak Spanish) in South Florida, and many hold union jobs at MIA airport, so the 'minority' argument is not always true.
